Explore Traditional Villages of Mt. Pelion

Rating: 5 out of 5.

available all year round

What we will do

We will start our experience by meeting in the city center of Volos. I will pick you up by car and we will drive to the mount Pelion, which is known from the Greek mythology as a place where centaurs were living.

The drive is short, around 25 min, but on our way up, we will make a few stops to admire the views, explore some old Christian churches and take some beautiful photos.

Our first stop will be the charming village of Portaria where we will witness the local architecture, the neoclassical mansions, many of which operate as guesthouses today, and learn some history about the village.

We then will continue our ride to Makrinitsa, also known as ”the balcony of Pelion” as it offers incredible views towards Volos. Makrinitsa is the most representative village of Pelion and it has preserved the integrity of its traditional Pelion-style architecture. We will walk along the cobblestone lanes, visit the museum of Folk Art & History of Pelion (depends on day the museum may be closed), take pictures around scenic landscapes and make a wish throwing a coin in the old fountain of ”Immortal Waters”.

We will have a cup of Greek coffee or a local snack together enjoying the serene atmosphere and before returning back you will have time for some souvenir shopping. Pelion is popular for its unique herbs, tea, home-made sweets, tsipouro, pottery and more local products that will be nice to bring back home.

Camping Under the Stars

available from June – September

What we will do

We will start our trip from Volos city or the place you stay in. I will pick you up by car and we will drive through the Mount Pelion to reach the east side of the mountain. Facing many curves on our way we will enjoy a peaceful ride while witnessing some amazing views. We will have some stops to buy local pies and fill fresh water from the springs to end up in the small picturesque village of Argalasti, where we will witness the local culture, the old mansions and have a cup of Greek coffee next to the locals. Here you will have the chance to shop some traditional products of the area like olive oil and herbs.

Afterwards, we will head up to the beach where we will camp for the night. The beach is huge and isolated but depending on the month of your visit there may be many locals. We will spend our time swimming, taking photos and playing beach tennis until we are exhausted. Before the sun goes down we will set up our tents and get ready for dinner. I will arrange our simple yet delicious dinner but feel free to bring with you anything eatable you may desire. We will share our adventures and stories under the summer sky full of stars before going to bed.

The next morning will find us waking up early due to the summer heat but we will be compensated by a refreshing dive into the crystal clear waters of the Aegean. If you are in the mood you can join me for some stretching, jogging and 20 min exercise session. After breakfast on the sand, we will have plenty of time to read a book and relax with the sound of waves.

Around the lunchtime, we will leave the beach and visit a hidden little tavern for a light meal or if you prefer to get a taste of the summer vibes we can discover a nearby beach bar for a sip of refreshing Mojito! By the evening we will return back to Volos and this experience will leave you full of memories and photos to share when you will return home.
